MISSION STATEMENT: The purpose of Transitional Services is to prepare all students for college, vocational and/or job readiness.
VISION: The transition from school to work or college is often difficult for young people, especially those with disabilities. The tasks of choosing a job or college and preparing for this task present all youth -- with or without disabilities -- with complex decisions. Parents and professionals are particularly interested in helping students with disabilities make these decisions, and can be of considerable assistance by involving them in the process. The process can provide information needed to match the student's abilties and preferences to appropriate training programs or colleges. It can also identify the services required by the individual to make the transition from school to work or college as smooth and as successful as possible.
The Transition Plan describes the importance of vocational and college assessment in the educational process. The purpose of this plan is to research areas of interest of the student and to build on their wants and needs for their future endeavors. Types of options are discussed, as well as the roles that key professionals play in the evaluation process.
The importance of these services for students with disabilities is just beginning to be recognized. One of the purposes of transition is to emphasize the need to increase the availability of these services to all youth with disabilities as they plan for the future.
